Ombuds: What’s in a name?

Ombuds—also known as ombudsperson and ombudsman—are alternative dispute resolution (ADR) practitioners, who have unique and often misunderstood roles. Ombudsmen have existed since the 1700s. Their roles and functions have evolved over the years and are now found in government, private sector, higher education, K-12 education, law firms, corporations, non-profits, prisons, nursing homes and newspapers. This evolution has created a variety of ombuds models, which cause confusion; yet, the essence of any ombuds program remains the same: provide comprehensive conflict management options to help institutions and constituents informally resolve matters at the lowest level possible and hold up a mirror to their organization, government entity, etc.
This program will introduce three common ombuds models in the United States (classical, advocate, and organizational) and explore the burgeoning role of organizational ombuds.
