Our special guest this week, Kent Halkett, Attorney at Law, will present on:

Mental Health Challenges for Lawyers, Mediators, Arbitrators and Judges - A Message of Hope

The law is an inherently stressful way to earn a living.  The profession is now a business.  Poor mental health is a medical condition.  It is perpetuated in the law through a combination of shame, stress, status and stigma.  Lawyers, mediators, arbitrators and judges - who are excellent problem solvers by nature, education and training - have not solved the mental health problem in their ranks.  Good news: lawyers, mediators, arbitrators and judges with mental health challenges can thrive in their professions.

Our presenter, Kent Halkett, a court appointed mediator for the Los Angeles Superior Court and a trial attorney for over 40 years, who survived a suicide attempt in 2015, shares his personal journey through clinical depression and his message of hope.  His articles and talks on the mental health challenges in the law have been recognized for the personal insights and honesty he brings to this taboo topic.

Kent is an experienced attorney with broad and deep experience handling complex commercial disputes and litigation. He has practiced at the trial and appellate levels in state and federal courts, peer review proceedings, arbitrations, and mediations. He has an established record of successful outcomes for plaintiff and defendant clients in litigation, and clients with legal issues and disputes outside of litigation.

In addition, Kent is the author of numerous article on areas of interest in the legal community, published in the American Bar Journal, California Lawyer, Tennessee Bar Journal, Los Angeles Lawyer, Vanderbilt Law, and Association of Business Trial Lawyers (ABTL) Report. His article, "Mental Health in the Legal Profession: A Crisis, a Case Study and a Call to Action," the cover story in the Tennessee Bar Journal (January/February 2021), hit a nerve with lawyers and non-lawyers across the country by putting a spotlight on a taboo topic in the law. Since then, he published additional articles on mental health, including "A BigLaw Partner's Journey through Clinical Depression," appearing in the ABA Journal (April 23, 2021). Kent speaks on the mental health challenges in the law to law schools, law firms, bar associations and other groups.
